Things you ought to know about the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia

Tags: FIFA World Cup, Russia.
Posted on Monday, May 14, 2018 by "T".

The 21st edition of the FIFA World Cup shall be held from June 14 to July 15 in Russia. Starting from June 14 to July 15, 2018, the greatest soccer players in the world shall gather together in Russia for yet another FIFA World Cup event. The tournament returns to Europe for the first time since it was held in Germany back in 2006.

Just like every year, there's no shortage of soccer-related stories as the event draws near. Is this going to be the year in which Lionel Messi finally wins the only major trophy he's been missing in his list of career achievements? It has been a 32-year famine for Argentina. That window of opportunity may be closing for Cristiano Ronaldo, who will try to power Portugal (the 2016 Euro winners) to another title. How's Neymar doing, who is recovering from a broken foot? Will he be fit enough to lead the Brazil team to its 6th World Cup title?

The host country Russia shall get the party started in Moscow on June 14 against Saudi Arabia, and by July 15 a new world champion shall be crowned.

Portugal versus Spain is one of the most intriguing of the early matchups, which takes place in Sochi on the second day of the tournament, whereas the two big favorites, Brazil and Germany, will begin their campaigns on the first Sunday against Switzerland and Mexico, respectively.

Telemundo and Fox have the TV broadcast rights for this edition of the World Cup, which means that the games will air on Telemundo and NBC Universo in Spanish, and on Fox and Fox Sports 1 in English. You can also stream all the World Cup games in either English or Spanish on fuboTV.

About the FIFA World Cup
The FIFA World Cup is a quadrennial international football tournament in which the men's national teams of the member associations of FIFA compete for the number 1 spot and the prize, the World Cup trophy.
The final tournament will be held on July 15 at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

VENUES
Overall, 64 matches shall be played in 12 stadium venues located in 11 cities in Russia.

Out of the 12 stadiums to be used for the tournament, three of them (Luzhniki, Sochi, and Yekaterinburg) have been thoroughly renovated and the rest of the 9 stadiums are brand new. For hosting this tournament, $11.8 billion has been spent.

The two biggest stadiums in Russia, the Luzhniki Stadium (in Moscow) and the Saint Petersburg Stadium shall be used the most - 7 matches are to be held at each of these stadiums.

Samara, Sochi, Kazan and Nizhny Novogrod will host 6 matches, including one quarter-final match each.
The Otkrytiye Stadium (in Moscow) and Rostov-on-Don will host 5 matches each, including one round of 16 match each.

Saransk, Kaliningrad, Volgograd and Yekaterinburg will host 4 matches each, and none of these cities will host knockout stage games.

LOGO BRAND

The 2018 tournament logo was inspired by Russia's rich artistic tradition and its history of bold achievement and innovation, according to Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko. Sepp Blatter, FIFA President, said that it reflected the "heart and soul" of the country.

MATCH BALL

Introduced on November 9, 2017 and presented in Moscow by Lionel Messi, the official match ball of the 2018 FIFA World Cup is called "Telstar 18", based on the name and design of the very first Adidas World Cup ball back in 1970.
The name ‘Telstar' is a combination of the words ‘television' and ‘star'.

MASCOT

Since 1966, each FIFA World Cup has its own mascot representative. The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia mascot will be a wolf called Zabivaka, its name translated from Russian meaning "The Goalscorer".

TICKETING

The first wave of ticket sales began on September 14 up to October 12, 2017. Fortunately, the general Russian visa policy shall not apply to both participants and fans of the World Cup, so they are allowed to enter Russia without a visa right before and during the competitions, regardless of their citizenship. A Fan ID would be required for fans attending the matches.

The ticket's design was revealed on April 6, 2018, which contained security features including a barcode, a hologram beside the stadium sector map, and the name of the ticketholder.

TV BROADCASTING RIGHTS
FIFA sold the television broadcasting rights for the 2018 FIFA World Cup event to a variety of local broadcasters.

In the United States, the 2018 World Cup will be aired by Fox Sports and Fox Sports 1 (English), and Telemundo and NBC Universo (Spanish).
In the United Kingdom, soccer fans can tune in to BBC and ITV.

I know guys, but i made only one ticket with friendly matches. Unfortunately it is odious what happens in those matches. The favorites play as though they would not play... It is very good that the world cup comes now and we have the chances to bet on real matches.. Good luck guys. Smile

Yes, it is usually learned by a bad experience.
But beware, you can also bet on those friendlies to crazy results, like a Spain 0 vs 1 Moldova, to say an example.
I have also guessed those results that one believes will never happen, and they pay quite well!
In general, I recommend not betting on those games. Or at least, learn more about which players are going to play the game, etc.

I have put money on 3 teams, Brazil Belgium and France but I hope Belgium can win it though. BTW Im an England fan but I have lost faith inthem in big tournaments lol

Well for Belgium I can say this : they have a great attacking + midfield with De Bruyne, Hazard, Dembele, Mertens, Lukaku , Fellaini, Carasco, …

The coach did not select Radja Naingolan !!!!!!!

The defence is the problem : we have Kompany , Alderwaireld, Verthongen and Vermaelen

But Kompany and Vermaelen were injured and if they can not play there is a big problem as the back-ups there are not from the same skill.
see what happenned 2 years ago versus Wales in the Eur Championship.

But if Kompany, Vermaelen get fit they will have a chance as Hazard, de Bryune and Lukaku are in very shape at the moment

Spain sacks its head coach one day before the tournament starts. Shock
Julen Lopetegui will take over from Zidane at Real Madrid after the end of the Wolrd Cup, but has now a few more free days than he may have expected.
 dule-vu6/13/2018 10:29:14 AM GMT
well this is big news just one day before start!I saw this morning that will be conference about this problem, but didnt expect that will fire him right away!in one hand I agree with spanish association, because they should give this news before world cup!they could wait that they finish tournament and then say this!
 CALICUL6/17/2018 6:28:15 PM GMT
Ligador my friend you started with 3 points in the world cup even if you could make a better game. It's good that you did not lose points in this match. Another good match and your country will qualify i think. I made bets here and spain or argentina destroy my results but the other matches i guess the result but not the golaveraj. Good luck for Uruguay men. Thumbs Up
 pochui6/18/2018 3:29:27 PM GMT
well regarding Thomas muller and he becoming the dude who scores 5 or more goals in three straight world cups that does look a bit unlikely now right, germany now basically have no room for slipups and who knows they may even not qualify form group stage, now this would be quite a surprise.
 CALICUL6/19/2018 6:40:20 PM GMT
If Germany does not win with Sweden then the qualification is lost. I do not think Germany is in a bad shape, because Mexico is a good team and he managed to win. My opinion is that Germany will win in the next two matches. Will have to fight as it has always in history.
 shokaku6/19/2018 6:58:42 PM GMT
Mexico is a fairly average team. Any good team had played out their counterattacks much better, and it would have been a rout. Try playing that open in the defense against France or Belgium, and look what happens.

Loew is back to the system he and Klinsmann startet after 2004. Putting every one except the two central defenders in the attack. Didn't work then, doesn`t work now.
 CALICUL6/23/2018 8:03:25 PM GMT
shokaku a victory came from Germany and in the next few days another victory came after my prognosis. Stay relaxed because your national team have a good chance of going through groups. you had emotions at break of this match with Sweden but in the final was good. Smile

I was yesterday, of course, shocked by the game Germany-Sweden .... if Germany had not scored this incredible goal in the final seconds of the game, then of course Mexico and Sweden would quietly have played a draw and left Germany behind the tournament .... but Germany was very lucky
 shokaku6/24/2018 2:26:52 PM GMT
Yep. A VERY lucky escape. The defense was still shaky, the midfield lost the ball to often, and the forwards need to many chances to score a goal. Even worse than i expected before the tournament. Will most likely make it to the knock out stages of the tournament, but can be knocked out by basicly any team they will face there.
 CALICUL6/24/2018 8:18:28 PM GMT
Now Germany has the courage because that goal was a golden one, i could say. Another victory with qualification and after that you will win the World Cup again. Teams are not that good and Germany can win anytime. Other teams such as Belgium, Croatia, Portugal or Mexico can always surprise. There are still matches to play and we are speaking after groups about the chances of the teams.
 shokaku6/25/2018 7:39:59 AM GMT
The first of the final games of the group stages are at hand.
In group A everything is clear. Russia and Uruguay are through.
In group B Spain has the best chances, as a draw is good enough for them, and they can even qualify with a loss, if the other game goes their way. Portugal and Iran play out the other team going into the knock out stages, with Iran needing a win.
 Mysik866/25/2018 8:00:24 AM GMT
I post here too... Poland played like shit! It's shame for me, to watch my national team, which play like children... It was one of the worst game on this World Cup. No fighting, no playing, no passes.
 shokaku6/25/2018 8:43:58 AM GMT
They were not able to set up Lewandowski, who, like many Bayern players isn`t in his best form at the moment, and in the defense the players are just to slow. Can work if they can concentrate purely on the defense, but if they need to open up to put more players in the attack, they are extremely vulnerable to counter attacks.
 Mysik866/25/2018 9:09:34 AM GMT
But they can't counter-attack. All of the top teams, when construct a counter-attack, they make 2-3 passes and try to score. Poland when try to counter-attack passes on defense line, and give time to opponent to regroup and back to own half. Playing like this, you never score from counter-attack. I saw match Belgium vs Tunisia, and always when Tunisia has miss pass, Belgium score goal. This was pure beauty!
 pajalnick6/25/2018 2:59:27 PM GMT
after the first half of the game, Uruguay-Russia 2-0 in favor of Uruguay .... I certainly hoped that the Russian team can adequately resist Uruguay but .... both goals as it seems to be the fault of our goalkeeper .... he is certainly a good goalkeeper, but Such goals should not be missed ....
 CALICUL6/25/2018 8:19:14 PM GMT
I bet here in The BankrollMob on the Uruguay - Russia match 0-1 but the final result was 3-0. I did not expect that after two wins with weak teams, both with 1-0, Uruguay to beat the score Russia ( who scored 8 goals in 2 matches ) especially as it is the host. Your team had a poor match, probably rested a few players. Confused
 shokaku6/26/2018 5:04:42 AM GMT
The usual susspects quaöified on the first day.
Today there is group C. Australia with just one point plays against Peru, who are out already, and needs a win and a victory of france over Denmark in the other game. But there a draw would suite both teams. So i wouldn't hold my breath.
Things in group D are more interesting. Unless Iceland lands a major victory over already qualified Croatia, the match between Nigeria and Argentina will produce the other team going into the ko stages. So with a win Argentina can still qualify.
 shokaku6/27/2018 5:06:00 AM GMT
After the drama between Argentina and Nigeria yesterday, today may produce the next nailbiter. In group E we could still end up with three teams having 6 points or 1 team with 9 and three teams with 3. Mexico has the best chances. A draw is good enough, and if Germany doesn`t beat South Korea, they would qualify even with a loss. Germany and Sweden have to win and watch the other game, while Korea must win and than pray. Group F is basicly down to a showdown between Serbia and Brazil, with the Serbs needing a win
 CALICUL6/27/2018 8:21:41 PM GMT
I want Serbs to win with Brasil but it's hard for Serbs to win. Has an opportunity because Brazil is not a big team right now. I also want France and Portugal to lose with Argentina and Uruguay. Croatia and Denmark i think the first team will win. Spain with Rusia i do not know because Spain has matches but not so good and Russia he does not have the good team but it can produce surprise and eliminate Spain.
 pajalnick6/27/2018 9:23:31 PM GMT
neeeeeeeeeeeeeeettttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttееееет I can not believe that .... Germany lost 0-2 Korea ... it's just some kind of trshsh ... on the other hand it works the rule that the champions do not leave the band .... this is of course terrible but as a result the champion will be non-negotiable
 shokaku6/28/2018 4:13:29 AM GMT
Last two groups to go into their final games. In group G everything is clear. Belgium and England are through, Tunisia and Panama already out. Far more interesting is group H. Japan has the best chances. Any draw will see them through, and they may qualify even with a loss. In the other game Colombia and Senegal battle it out, with Colombia needing a win.
 Mysik866/28/2018 7:23:58 AM GMT
Germany lost! And they're out of World Cup Smile It was one of the best news in Poland Smile Check Polish internet today. And German newspapers were laughing of Poland and Lewandowski after we lost to Colombia. Karma is back Smile

Best World Cup ever! Big Smile Big Smile Big Smile
 Mober6/28/2018 3:39:42 PM GMT
That was a big surprise. It have ruined a small parlay that i had.
It would have been a good one also, to hit right here in brm for the leader board.
I wonder if any had picked that result Smile
 pajalnick6/28/2018 4:14:04 PM GMT
briefly about the situation in the group F
 dule-vu6/28/2018 4:15:57 PM GMT
4th time that team from europe, who won last world cup,go home after three games in group!this time its germany!they didnt play good and we can see that this win against sweden in injury time was just luck!they didnt even score goal yesterday and something is bad their team!

 CALICUL6/28/2018 8:22:16 PM GMT
I do not understand why Germany played so poorly in this world. Mucilaginous Joachim Löw need to be replaced with someone else. Poland looks like a strong team for a few years but in this world championship played poorly ( 1-5 goal difference in two matches and 0 points ). Maybe to another final tournament will play better.
 shokaku6/29/2018 2:39:00 PM GMT
Actualy Germany played poorly throughout the whole year. The last results before the World Cup were a loss against Austria (Austria!) amd a meagre 2:1 over Saudi-Arabia. The guys that got trashed 5:0 by Russia.

And yes, usualy it would be replacement time. But i have my doubts if they find a respected head coach that can piece together a new squad.
 pajalnick6/29/2018 9:30:29 PM GMT
of course the coach of the German national team needs to be changed .... he seems to me to have made several mistakes in the formation of the team and in such a sad outcome .... maybe he will understand that he made a mistake and correct the situation but it seems to me better the new coach
 shokaku6/30/2018 5:08:36 AM GMT
First day of the knock out stages. Two times Europe versus South America. France takes on Argentina, and Portugal plays Uruguay. Both France and Uruguay cruised through the group stage, while Argentina and Portugal had some problems.
 dule-vu6/30/2018 10:52:38 AM GMT
even it looks like we should know who will pass from this games,I suppose that will be some suprises,at least at bets in 90. minutes!we have favourites, but who know what will decide this winners!some penalty,VAR,red card!but cant wait that games start!

ive read alot funny stuff on internet after germany fked up like beginners, like "not the first time germany lost in russia". but when i read people like you id wish i was a real german, because to see so much hate and exspecialy to smell the "fear" when playing football vs germany leaves a goose bump on my back because that has to be something germany is proud of Big Smile

btw, i haven read all newspapers but skipped over a few and i havent seen a single bad word about poland. that has to be either bad translation or propaganda by your goverment. not like your brazil, france, italy or another big football nation to have a laugh if they fail. just poland... who barely qualify for worldcup Tongue

 shokaku7/1/2018 5:28:26 AM GMT
After two exciting games yesterday, todays games pitch european teames against each other. Spain takes on host Russia, while in the evening Croatia plays Denmark. Only Croatia played the group stage convincingly, and especialy Spain had its shaky moments.

Let's see what the newspapers will say about Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. They will laugh at them or not? I think this is not the case because they and other players have had some tiresome seasons. It is not easy to play at high level very good any time. Physical condition without rest do not resist.
 schwabo7/1/2018 9:47:25 PM GMT
Yes,Croatia won Danmark and goes to 1/4 finales where we play against Rusia for 1/2 finale, after 120 min. 1:1 and 4:3 after penalties,
It's better when biger countries going home Spain,Portugal,Germany,Argentina.
Going to drink now Thumbs Up Big Smile

Congrats to Croatia and Russia on 1\4 finale's Thumbs Up

After two penalty shotouts yesterday today brings two games with clear favorites and underdogs. Brazil plays Mexico, who had a good start to the tournament, but had been put down to earth in their last game. The other game sees Belgium, with three wins in the group stage, take on Japan, for me the worst team to make it into the knock out stage.
 Mysik867/2/2018 8:52:38 AM GMT
Please notice, that this World Cup has so many surprises, that there's no favorites and no underdogs Smile For me, better option to bet is win of Belgium. I saw their matches, and for me it's the perfect candidate for the champion. They have awesome players on attack, and of course - Thibault Courtois - the best goalkeeper on this WC. So, go Belgium, go go go! Smile
And Mexico may make another surprise, because Brazil's play don't looks awesome... They're pretty average so far... but it's still Brazil Smile
 shokaku7/2/2018 10:42:06 AM GMT
Yep. Belgiums play had been good so far. But that was also true for the last two tournaments. Then they came up against heavy resistance, and faltered. And Brazil may actually be stronger without Neymar, who plays only for himself.
 dule-vu7/2/2018 12:45:21 PM GMT
I think that long season affect on lot of teams and players!we had champions league final almost on end of may and just after 20 days world cup started!players just have too much games in legs and its not normal to play so many cups, league and international games!thats why so many better teams are out,but its good for rest of world!
 CALICUL7/2/2018 8:26:02 PM GMT
I thought, i knew more about this world cup but unfortunately i missed many results. There were some surprises and few matches that ended with X. Big teams have been eliminated in this world cup and the remaining teams not playing a football as beautiful as i wanted. Probably because of the ball this is happening.
 pajalnick7/2/2018 9:49:14 PM GMT
today finally won the favorites ... Brazil of course a very good team but the simulation of Neimar spoiled the impression ...... but the Japanese well done .... the cool started the second half ... and in the end of course there was not enough experience ... instead of quietly finishing the game 25 seconds tried to score and the payoff was terrible
 shokaku7/3/2018 4:56:57 AM GMT
After the dramatic finish of Belgium vs Japan, today brings the last games of the first knock out round. Sweden takes on the Swiss, and i am completely clueless about the outcome. The other game pitches England versus Colombia, who got their act together after their loss in the first game against Japan, and won the other two to even win their group.
 dule-vu7/3/2018 4:05:56 PM GMT
when you see results from yesterday, you can say that everything is normal, but everybody who watched belgium-japan game couldnt say that!it was great game and who could expekt that belgium will score 3 goal till end of game, especially that one in last seconds!
 Mysik867/3/2018 4:08:19 PM GMT
Yes. This match was awesome. One of the best matches on this world cup! I didn't expect that Belgium not only score 2 goals for draw, but also win match in regular time! It was truly incredible to watch. I hope that Belgium will win whole Cup - they deserve it, and it's nice to see how they play.

Congrats to Croatia and Russia on 14 finale's Thumbs Up

Two teams which were great at killing football tbh but their lucky break was the danish and spanish teams who were just doing the same. It was a nasty day for those who love this game. Congrats to them anyway.
 CALICUL7/3/2018 8:36:24 PM GMT
It was a sensation comeback for the Belgians, in the game last night with Japan. Asian players did not surprise after they led with two goals, and they left this edition of world cup. Brasil he did not have big emotions with Mexic, and will be an interesting match Brasil - Belgium.
