Things you ought to know about the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia

Tags: FIFA World Cup, Russia.
Posted on Monday, May 14, 2018 by "T".

The 21st edition of the FIFA World Cup shall be held from June 14 to July 15 in Russia. Starting from June 14 to July 15, 2018, the greatest soccer players in the world shall gather together in Russia for yet another FIFA World Cup event. The tournament returns to Europe for the first time since it was held in Germany back in 2006.

Just like every year, there's no shortage of soccer-related stories as the event draws near. Is this going to be the year in which Lionel Messi finally wins the only major trophy he's been missing in his list of career achievements? It has been a 32-year famine for Argentina. That window of opportunity may be closing for Cristiano Ronaldo, who will try to power Portugal (the 2016 Euro winners) to another title. How's Neymar doing, who is recovering from a broken foot? Will he be fit enough to lead the Brazil team to its 6th World Cup title?

The host country Russia shall get the party started in Moscow on June 14 against Saudi Arabia, and by July 15 a new world champion shall be crowned.

Portugal versus Spain is one of the most intriguing of the early matchups, which takes place in Sochi on the second day of the tournament, whereas the two big favorites, Brazil and Germany, will begin their campaigns on the first Sunday against Switzerland and Mexico, respectively.

Telemundo and Fox have the TV broadcast rights for this edition of the World Cup, which means that the games will air on Telemundo and NBC Universo in Spanish, and on Fox and Fox Sports 1 in English. You can also stream all the World Cup games in either English or Spanish on fuboTV.

About the FIFA World Cup
The FIFA World Cup is a quadrennial international football tournament in which the men's national teams of the member associations of FIFA compete for the number 1 spot and the prize, the World Cup trophy.
The final tournament will be held on July 15 at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

VENUES
Overall, 64 matches shall be played in 12 stadium venues located in 11 cities in Russia.

Out of the 12 stadiums to be used for the tournament, three of them (Luzhniki, Sochi, and Yekaterinburg) have been thoroughly renovated and the rest of the 9 stadiums are brand new. For hosting this tournament, $11.8 billion has been spent.

The two biggest stadiums in Russia, the Luzhniki Stadium (in Moscow) and the Saint Petersburg Stadium shall be used the most - 7 matches are to be held at each of these stadiums.

Samara, Sochi, Kazan and Nizhny Novogrod will host 6 matches, including one quarter-final match each.
The Otkrytiye Stadium (in Moscow) and Rostov-on-Don will host 5 matches each, including one round of 16 match each.

Saransk, Kaliningrad, Volgograd and Yekaterinburg will host 4 matches each, and none of these cities will host knockout stage games.

LOGO BRAND

The 2018 tournament logo was inspired by Russia's rich artistic tradition and its history of bold achievement and innovation, according to Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko. Sepp Blatter, FIFA President, said that it reflected the "heart and soul" of the country.

MATCH BALL

Introduced on November 9, 2017 and presented in Moscow by Lionel Messi, the official match ball of the 2018 FIFA World Cup is called "Telstar 18", based on the name and design of the very first Adidas World Cup ball back in 1970.
The name ‘Telstar' is a combination of the words ‘television' and ‘star'.

MASCOT

Since 1966, each FIFA World Cup has its own mascot representative. The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia mascot will be a wolf called Zabivaka, its name translated from Russian meaning "The Goalscorer".

TICKETING

The first wave of ticket sales began on September 14 up to October 12, 2017. Fortunately, the general Russian visa policy shall not apply to both participants and fans of the World Cup, so they are allowed to enter Russia without a visa right before and during the competitions, regardless of their citizenship. A Fan ID would be required for fans attending the matches.

The ticket's design was revealed on April 6, 2018, which contained security features including a barcode, a hologram beside the stadium sector map, and the name of the ticketholder.

TV BROADCASTING RIGHTS
FIFA sold the television broadcasting rights for the 2018 FIFA World Cup event to a variety of local broadcasters.

In the United States, the 2018 World Cup will be aired by Fox Sports and Fox Sports 1 (English), and Telemundo and NBC Universo (Spanish).
In the United Kingdom, soccer fans can tune in to BBC and ITV.

well I guess that it will be another chance to watch some great football once the season of football is over... kinda extension of the football season in a way. of course more at stake and probably a few bets will be fired away and lost from moi along the way...

Not a chance to watch football, but a chance to place some small bets Smile
A couple of parlay ones also.
Not the best results so far from games like the world cup, but it never hurts trying,
for a payout Smile

It's hard to predict many matches from this World Cup. It's much easier to do it in the European Cups because there you know many teams but at the Russian edition of World Cup there are many countries about which you do not know many things. Anyway i prefer to win a country from Europe.
 shokaku5/14/2018 8:12:13 PM GMT
Looking forward to this tourney, even if some top teams are missing out on it, and some stars may miss it due to injury. Will be difficult for the host to make it even out of the group stage tho.

The best sport in the world, and the best competition of all! Let's go Uruguay!
It will be a nice month to shorten the winter (at least here in South America). Any game is worth watching, and in some maybe bet. But do not trust! Choose games carefully, sometimes surprising results are given.
My favorite groups:
A: Uruguay- Russia
B: Spain Portugal
C: France Peru (although it is difficult without P. Guerrero)
D: Croatia Argentina
E: Brazil Switzerland
F: Germany Sweden
G: Belgium England
H: Colombia Poland

it is a great pity that I can not see this wonderful event at the stadium .... it was very difficult to buy tickets for the games .... but in any case it is a wonderful event and in my city of St. Petersburg there will be a lot of interesting events besides the games .. I will be near and enjoy this
 doubletop7775/15/2018 7:36:36 AM GMT
I cannot wait for the World Cup to start and i will be glued to most games. The introduction of VAR should be interesting and controversial at times as well. I will be having a small bet on France to win
 Gerimantas5/15/2018 12:55:06 PM GMT
I too will watch many games, maybe not all because some matches from start of tournament is not very interesting, but from when countries qualify from group then all games are interesting and i will watch all of them
 CALICUL5/15/2018 4:55:44 PM GMT
I'm not the fan of any team at this tournament World Cup 2018. I could predict who would win this world but honestly i was not to be interested by the players of Germany or Spain because in my opinion they are the ones who have the most chances. South American teams will have a hard job if they want to win the final.
 ligador375/16/2018 12:30:53 AM GMT
I agree that Germany is the great candidate, but I think France is more candidate than Spain, which is a tremendous team anyway.
Anyway, the South Americans have good teams. You say Brazil is not a candidate? Difficult to leave it out of these competitions. While I agree that Germany is better than Brazil, I would put him as the second candidate, in addition to the good players he has, they have an excellent coach.
 CALICUL5/16/2018 4:56:08 PM GMT
I think it is very hard for the South Americans to win and is not impossible of course but after Spain and Germany. To win, Argentine, Brazil or another South American team need to fight very hard with my favorites or with anothers europeans teams because the rest of the world can not to win World Cup in this moment. First chance Europeans second chance South Americans.
 shokaku5/16/2018 6:44:58 PM GMT
I am a bit surprised that Germany is seen is one of the hot favorites. The team is not as strong as in 2014. A few key players quit, others got older and more injury prone, while the promises for the futere from 2014 didn't even make the squad this time. In the last test games a loss against Brasil and a flattening draw against Spain. Both games at home. Will struggle to make it past the quarterfinal.
 ligador375/17/2018 10:56:56 AM GMT
we must consider that those parties were friendly. when they are for the cup, Germany is another totally different one. In addition to Brazil they played with an almost alternative team and lost just 1-0. Germany is always favorite regardless of the years. It was never about having great individualities, but a perfect collective game. and that I still see that they have it
 dule-vu5/17/2018 1:33:40 PM GMT
I will watch whole world cup, even I dont expect much for serbia, because they can play bad and good and thats why I dont watch them a lot in last years!only red star as club, but national teams disappointed us so many times, that I cant expect anything from them!
 CALICUL5/17/2018 4:58:14 PM GMT
There are few nationalities who have been remarked in these preliminaries with the solidity of their game and one of them is Brasil. Many betting houses say Brasil is favorite but in important matches with European teams she is scared. If Brasil continues in this way they will lose again of course.
 JUGADOR20115/18/2018 1:14:52 AM GMT
my favorite teams by groups to go to the 8th finals of the world cup are
Group A: Russia, Uruguay
Group B: Portugal, Spain
Group C: France, Denmark
Group D: Argentina, Croatia,
Group E: Brazil, Serbia
Group F: Germany, Mexico,
Group G: Belgium, England
Group H: Poland, Colombia,
 pajalnick5/18/2018 9:24:36 AM GMT
to my great regret and sorrow the team of Russia is very weak now ... the head coach because of conflicts in the past did not take the best Russian midfielder in the team ... and this speaks of his shortsightedness and stupidity .... so I think that the team Russia can not even leave the group ... it's sad
 ligador375/18/2018 2:35:06 PM GMT
First you have to play the games. Russia starts with Saudi Arabia and I think it's a good match to win the 3 points that give you some peace of mind. Uruguay plays against Egypt, and their fearsome Mo Salah, but in reality after him, Egypt does not have a great team.
I see Russia moving to eighths. I wish Uruguay too.
They face in the 3rd round, and I hope that by that date the 2 classified
 dule-vu5/19/2018 2:14:22 PM GMT
pajalnick I think you are right, that russia dont have some play and that probably they wouldnt even be at world cup,if they are not hosts!but I wish luck to our brother country and hope that you will get out of group at least!
hope that whole world cup will be interesting for watching!
 CALICUL5/19/2018 5:01:13 PM GMT
My favorite group qualifiers are:
Grupa A Russia and Uruguay
Grupa B Portugal and Spain
Grupa C France and Denmark
Grupa D Argentina and Iceland
Grupa E Brazil and Switzerland
Grupa F Germany and Mexico
Grupa G Belgium and England
Grupa H Poland and Colombia

I am not a huge fan of soccer or football or whatever it is called, but I am eagerly looking forward to watching the 2018 FIFA World Cup. It is anyone's guess which country will ultimately win the championship.

the chances of getting out of the group are of course .... even with such a weak team as now ... the first match will decide a lot ... Saudi Arabia I hope Russia will win .... with Uruguay no chance ... and the most important match with Egypt ... awful Salah can bury Russia ... but he's there alone there is a superstar ... it will be interesting
 shokaku5/20/2018 1:40:35 PM GMT
Salah still has to play one important game against Sergio Ramos flying tackle circus. Don't expect him to be a threat to the opposing teams for the month that follow this encounter, and this include the World Cup
 dule-vu5/20/2018 2:25:22 PM GMT
even today everyone play football, russia if cant win saudia arabia at home, then dont deserve to even play at this world cup!and you are right pajalnick about next two games,it would be hard!but at least group is normal and every team can play against other, its not like you have argentina or spain in group!
 CALICUL5/20/2018 5:02:11 PM GMT
Shokaku, I hope that Mohamed Salah to make a big match in the Champions League Final and Liverpool to win. I hate Real Madrid for a long time, many years and duel of which you speak with Salah vs Sergio Ramos you can see in this final. Ramos is a odious footballer. If he was driving the car as football plays would spend many years in prison. To the world cup is hard to meet because Egipt is not in the group with Spain. It's hard for Egypt to go through groups.
 ligador375/20/2018 7:23:51 PM GMT
I also hope that Liverpool wins the Champions League, although the favorite is Real Madrid. In addition to that Liverpool has to make 3 goals or more, because the referees are ultimately in favor of Madrid. And in the way that Salah was injured so that he does not face Uruguay in the World Cup haha.
He is really a great player, but in Egypt he is quite alone. The games that I saw the Egyptians playing were not a big deal. I see Russia stronger
 dule-vu5/21/2018 2:48:35 PM GMT
I just wonder till when salah can play like this!maybe on this world cup he will continue to play like in liverpool, but I dont know how long this will last!its strange that he could play like this in other big clubs!I hope that I am wrong, but I think that this will stop soon!
 shokaku5/21/2018 3:32:24 PM GMT
Klopps style is to hit them on the break, so a lot of attacks are made against a defence that may not be properly organized for the moment. Ideal for a mobile striker. On top of this, there are two more threats the defence must handle in Firminho and Mane. So Salahs run would stop the minute he would join a club managed by a guy like Mourinho.

They play in one group with Italy, the Netherlands and the USA
 CALICUL5/21/2018 5:02:58 PM GMT
Yes Ligador, I hope this team Real Madrid to catch a very bad day and not to play anything and Liverpool to win. I would also like this World Cup in Russia to be won by a country who does not have this trophy but this is harder. I hope that this World Cup will be beautiful football and teams will not play with fear.
